People Moves Monday: Weekly update

The past week saw appointments from HKEX and the SEC.

Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing (HKEX) appointed Daniel Sonder as its new chief strategy officer and head of data business, markets. Sonder was promoted to the role after joining HKEX from Brazilian stock exchange B3 earlier this year, where he served as chief financial officer. Before that, he served as a managing director at Credit Suisse.

As chief strategy officer, Sonder will lead the firm’s group strategy function while working alongside the HKEX management committee and executives across the business. Meanwhile, as head of data business, markets, he will collaborate with market data operations, leading the development of HKEX’s data business, while adding new data sets and services to HKEX’s existing offering.

Alongside Sonder’s appointment, HKEX expanded its emerging business development team with the appointment of Andrew Walton as managing director and head of digital assets, markets; and Ken Chiu as head of carbon and ESG products, markets.

Elsewhere, Jaime Lizárraga has been sworn into office as a commissioner of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) by the company’s chair, Gary Gensler. Commissioner Lizárraga was nominated by President Biden earlier this year and confirmed by the US Senate on June 16.

In his most recent role, Commissioner Lizárraga served as senior advisor to house speaker Nancy Pelosi, where he oversaw issues related to financial markets, small business, international finance and immigration. Commissioner Lizárraga brings over 30 years’ experience in public service to his new role.
